ADHD, known as ‘Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,’ is a condition that affects over 2 million people in the United Kingdom and presents itself differently in each person. It can affect anyone of any age, race and gender; however, studies have shown more males are diagnosed with the condition than females. Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is generally described in three main types and are based on which symptoms are most prominent. ADHD exists on a spectrum of severity, you can also experience emotional dysregulation as well as other symptoms such as autism, anxiety and depression.
Hormonal changes such as the menopause can exacerbate symptoms therefore more females are being diagnosed later in life. ADHD can look different for each person, women can present with inattentive and internalised symptoms, while men can present with hyperactive, impulsive or combined symptoms.
When the day-to-day challenges of ADHD begin to build up, or when the symptoms are beginning to interfere with your life in undesirable ways, frustration and possible mental health issues can begin to form. Psychotherapy can be vital in helping those frustrations and can help understand a diagnosis fully. Psychotherapy, commonly known as ‘talking therapy’, is a treatment that involves building a therapeutic relationship with a trained professional in a non-judgemental space.
